Top Tips for Interacting with Young Children

This is an introductory module which looks at ways for adults to support quality play and interactions with young children to help develop caring relationships and maximise children’s enjoyment, development and learning.

The module is a mixed media presentation which will guide you through key messages in a clear, straightforward and interesting way. Video and audio are used to explain and illustrate important learning points making it an effective and time saving tool to help you get the most out of the time you spend working and playing with children.

By the end of this training, you should:

  • Have gained more understanding of the important role of quality, proportionate, well timed adult interactions in supporting children’s early brain development, attachment and learning through play.
  • Have explored ways to follow children’s lead in play to maximise their enjoyment and learning.
  • Have gained understanding of an easily applied model of practice to support children’s emotional development, communication and literacy skills.
  • Be able to share our ‘top tips’ with parents and carers; working in partnership and acknowledging their role as children’s primary ‘edu-carers’.
  • Have had time to consider implications for your day to day practice.
  • All practitioners, support staff, volunteers who work with or for children and young and their families.
  • Anyone who is considering working with young children and families.
  • Parents or carers who are interested supporting their engagement with very young children and helping children’s emotional development, communication and literacy skills.
